Buying agent versus freight forwarder

The two roles solve different problems. One can pay a domestic seller; the other can move a carton across a border. Many suppliers do both, which is why quotes are hard to compare.

Why combined quotes hide costs

When one supplier quotes a single all-in figure, the service fee and the freight cannot be separated. That means you cannot tell whether a cheaper quote is cheaper because the fee is low or because the freight assumption is optimistic — and freight is the part that changes once the parcel is measured.

Ask for the quote in this shape

Anyone unwilling to break the number down is either hiding a margin or has not done the measurement yet. Either way it is your risk.

Common questions

Can a forwarder buy from 1688 for me?

Some will, for a fee, but it is not their core job and inspection is usually not included.

Who handles customs?

Usually the forwarder, with you as importer of record. Confirm who files and who pays duties before shipping.

Do I need both for a small order?

Sometimes one supplier covers both ends. Ask explicitly which legs are included.
