How to buy from 1688 without a Chinese account
1688 is not built for you. There is no English checkout, no card payment and no international shipping. But there are three routes that work.
The blockers are specific, and each has a workaround:
- Search: the site is Chinese-only and image search needs an account.
- Registration: a Chinese mobile number is required.
- Payment: Alipay or Chinese bank transfer, RMB.
- Delivery: domestic only — sellers ship within China.
Route 1 — sourcing agent (least work, highest fee)
An agent buys on your behalf, consolidates, inspects and ships internationally. Typically 5–10% of order value plus shipping.
Good when: your first order, you need quality checks, or the order is large enough that the fee is small relative to risk.
Bad when: you are testing cheap products — a $50 agent fee on a $200 order destroys the test.
Route 2 — freight forwarder + your own 1688 account
You need the account (Chinese number, often obtained via an agent), you pay via an agent's Alipay, and a forwarder receives the goods in China and ships them.
Good when: repeat orders, you know your suppliers, volume is steady.
Bad when: one-off orders — account maintenance is real overhead.
Route 3 — search without an account, buy with help
