How to find a 1688 supplier from a product photo

You found a product that sells. You want the factory behind it. A photo is usually enough — if you know what to do with it.

1688.com is where Chinese factories list wholesale goods. Most Western sellers never see it because the site is Chinese-only and the search box expects keywords, not pictures. But 1688 has a reverse image search, and it is the fastest way from "this product sells" to "here is who makes it".

The 60-second version

  1. Get a clean photo. The main product image from the listing is ideal: white or plain background, one product, no text overlay. Screenshots of the search results grid are nearly useless.
  2. Run a reverse image search on 1688. Normally that means uploading inside 1688 — which needs a Chinese account. With SourceLens you upload the photo here and we query 1688 for you.
  3. Sort the matches by price and orders. The cheapest listing is often a reseller. The one with thousands of orders and a low MOQ is usually the factory.
  4. Open the listing (we link each match) and read the supplier's profile: years on 1688, factory floor area, number of employees, whether they are "生产厂家" (manufacturer) or "贸易公司" (trading company).

How to tell a factory from a reseller

SignalFactoryReseller
Supplier type label生产厂家 / 工厂贸易公司 / 经销商
Product rangeOne category, many variants of the same itemUnrelated products across dozens of categories
PriceLow, and drops further with quantityHigher, and often the same as competitors (they buy from the same factory)
MOQUsually higher (50–500 pcs) unless they also do samplesOften 1–2 pcs, because they drop-ship
CustomisationLogo printing, packaging, colour changes offeredUsually "as is" only

One trap: a factory's 1688 storefront sometimes looks thin because they sell mostly B2B offline. Low online order counts do not automatically mean "not a real factory" — check the years on platform and the factory profile instead.

What to do once you have the listing

  1. Order a sample. Always. Photos hide material quality.
  2. Ask three questions before price negotiation: what is the MOQ per colour, what is the lead time for 500 units, and can they print your logo (and what is the setup cost).
  3. Get the price ladder in writing — price at 100 / 500 / 1,000 / 5,000 units. This is where your margin lives.
  4. Compare at least 3 suppliers from the same reverse image search. The spread is usually 20–40%.
Reality check: reverse image search finds visually similar products, not necessarily the exact factory that made your sample. For commodity items (phone cases, cables, kitchen tools) it is near-exact. For branded or heavily styled goods it finds competitors making the same shape — which is still what you want.

FAQ

Do I need a Chinese phone number to search 1688?

To search on 1688.com directly, normally yes — the site requires a Chinese mobile number for registration. A tool that proxies the search for you removes that requirement.

Can I buy a single unit from 1688?

Many listings allow 1–2 pieces, but shipping one item from China to the US or EU usually costs more than the item. Samples make sense; single-unit reselling rarely does.

What if the photo returns nothing?

Try the plainest photo you can find, crop out watermarks and text, and avoid collages. If the product is a white-label generic, search a competitor's plain product shot instead.
